Dermal Fillers (Juvederm)
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Young skin is smooth and elastic because it contains large amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA). As we age, the amount of HA in the skin gradually diminishes resulting in the skin becoming dryer, thinner, and more wrinkled. HA fillers are a long lasting, but not permanent form of HA. The gel mimics the naturally occurring substance in our bodies by adding volume to the skin. When injected under the surface of the skin, the gel adds volume and smoothes facial lines and folds, and can be used to enhance and reshape features.
How Does It Work?
-A small amount is injected directly into or under the skin to add volume and restore hydration. HA is naturally integrated into the tissue and allows for the free passage of important nutritive elements like oxygen and hormones. Water also binds to HA, which adds to the filling effect.
What Are Fillers Used For?
BlushMD uses Juvederm. Different products within the Juvederm line are used for specific areas of the face. The product best suited for one area of the face may not be the same as another area. Filler can be used in the cheeks to create more defined cheek contours, restore lost volume, provide an overall youthful lift, as well as reduce the appearance of under eye bags and nasolabial folds! Filler can also be used in the lips to define the shape, restore lost volume and correct asymmetry.
Do The Injections Hurt?
Pain is very individualized and depends greatly on one's tolerance. Prior to treatment, Dr. Wade applies a very good topical numbing cream which takes about 15 minutes to take effect and allows for the injections to be much more comfortable.
What Is Involved In A Dermal Filler Treatment Session?
The treatment typically takes 15-45 minutes, depending on the areas treated and the the number of syringes used. Filler is injected with a very thin needle into areas of concern. Results are typically immediate. Swelling may be apparent right away, (especially in the lips), but usually subsides within a few days.
Can The Material Be Removed?
HA fillers are a natural material, so they dissolve with time. If you are not happy with the result or there is an unexpected complication, there is a medication called hyaluronidase which can assist in dissolving the filler.
Does It Contain Animal Products?
No, the HA fillers which are available in Canada are almost identical to that which is already present in the body. Since it is not made from animals, there is no risk of transmitting disease from animals or eliciting allergic reactions to common foods such as eggs, meat, or chicken.
Are There Any Precautions I Should Take Before Treatment?
Yes. If you are on any medications that cause bruising, you should check with your doctor to see if you can stop taking it 3-5 days prior to treatment. This may include aspirin (ASA), Motrin, Advil, and other prescription medications such as anticoagulants. Never stop taking prescribed medications without the consent of your doctor. Skyn by Ashlyn will always err on the side of caution, and will not provide treatment if there are any contraindications such as certain underlying medical issues or medications.
How Long Does The Effect Last?
HA filler dissolves naturally with time, and without touch-ups will eventually totally disappear from the body. How long a HA filler treatment lasts is very individualized, depending on many factors such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age, and metabolism. Certain products in the Juvederm line may last longer than others. Typically, about 50-80% of the effect remains after 6 months. The injected material will gradually disappear until your skin looks just as it did prior to treatment. You can repeat the treatment whenever you feel the need depending on the results you are going for.
